Bartow is Polk County’s seat of government, and much of the city’s residential footprint sits along the edge of the cattle pasture and rural land that still surrounds the county-seat core. That rural-adjacent geography is exactly where fire ants thrive: open, sun-exposed turf bordering pastureland gives colonies the disturbed soil and space they need to … Read more
Haines City sits along the US-27 growth corridor between Orlando and Tampa, and its population has expanded quickly through new subdivisions built on former grove and pasture land. That fast growth creates a termite picture unlike most of Polk County: rather than dealing mainly with legacy pressure in old housing stock, Haines City has to … Read more
Lake Wales sits on the Lake Wales Ridge, an ancient chain of sand dunes running down the spine of Polk County that produces some of the deepest, best-drained sandy soil in Central Florida. That geology cuts two ways for termite pressure: the well-drained ridge soil favors drywood termites, which do not need soil contact and … Read more
Auburndale grew up around the citrus packing houses that once lined its rail spurs, and much of the city’s older residential core still sits close to the groves that gave the town its identity. That grove-edge geography matters for termite pressure: citrus root systems, irrigation berms, and the sandy, organically rich soil used to support … Read more
House crickets are one of the more overlooked seasonal pests in Polk County, and Lakeland is no exception. Every summer, homeowners across the city notice the same pattern: a sudden increase in chirping after dusk, crickets jumping out from behind stored boxes in a garage, or crickets showing up indoors near a porch light left … Read more
Plant City’s residential neighborhoods sit close to some of Polk County’s most active farmland, and that field-to-yard transition creates a steady source of ant activity that behaves differently than in more purely residential parts of the county. Ghost ants and Argentine ants, both common trailing species in Central Florida, use field edges, irrigation lines, and … Read more
Plant City’s economy has centered on agriculture for well over a century, and the packing houses, processing facilities, and irrigated fields that surround the city keep humidity and organic matter high along its edges. That environment supports large outdoor populations of American cockroaches, the bigger species residents often call palmetto bugs, which then move from … Read more
Plant City calls itself the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, and its identity as a farming town shaped how the city was built – a compact historic downtown near the old train depot, ringed by residential streets that grew up alongside packing houses and farmland long before the interstate corridor drew newer subdivisions further … Read more
Auburndale sits among some of Polk County’s longest-established citrus groves, and that agricultural edge shapes rodent pressure in a way that is different from denser parts of Lakeland. Roof rats and house mice living in and around grove rows have a reliable, undisturbed food source for most of the year, but when groves are cleared … Read more
Bartow is Polk County’s seat and one of its oldest incorporated cities, and that history shows up in the housing stock surrounding its brick-lined downtown – original 1900s-era bungalows, older duplexes, and homes with crawl spaces and plumbing chases that have been added onto and modified for decades. Roaches, particularly the German cockroach and the … Read more
